Oil and Neutral light ON all the time

Postby kidRS2000 on Sun Mar 07, 2010 7:41 am

Hi all, I'm installing an Acewell 3972 to a 1990 VFR750 and the installation seems to be going well, except for the Oil and Neutral lights. For some reason these two lights remain ON even with the ignition switched OFF.

On the installation diagram both lights have a single -ve connection that connects via a switch to ground. In the original Honda diagram both lights share a common +ve connection, but then also have a -ve connection that connects to ground via their respective switches, as in the Acewell diagram. Thinking the -ve sides would be all that is needed for the Acewell, I connected both light -ve sides to the Honda -ve connections and now the lights are on all the time, even with ignition off. How do you wire the Acewell when there is only a single connection for these lights, when the original light instruments uses 2?

Interestingly when I clicked the bike into gear the neutral light goes out and there is a +ve voltage at the Acewell connection. So I think it's working as it sould (i.e. 0v light is ON, 12v light is OFF), but I just don't understand how to wire it with only a single connection?

Cheers,

Paul.

One thing I don't understand is why both banks of idiot lights need a direct +ve connection to the battery? I can understand that the clock needs a direct connection to the battery, because the time is displayed while the ignition is off. But why do the lights need a direct connection? The main loom only has a +ve connection via the ignition key, and I would think this would make more sense for the lightsa too? Am I missing something? The wiring diagram clearly has a direct +ve connection to the battery for both banks of lights.

Thanks,

Paul.

I agree mate, the wiring diagram is wrong. Just connect it up so it only gets power after the ignition is on. The only one to need a constant draw is the clock.

I guess you're right? I don't see how it can work any other way. :? I checked the other manuals at:

http://www.acewell-meter.co.uk/en_uk/manuals/index.htm

And only the 3994 has this additional +ve on the right bank of lights. I guess this would cause the same problem with the Oil and Neutral lights.

This is how my diagram looks:

I connected the idiot light +ve wires to the +ve activated by the ingnition key. The lights seems to work as I would expect now. :D
